CORRUGATED METAL HOSE

SS Metal Hose

Corrugated Metal Hose Fundamentals

Penflex corrugated hose is a high quality general purpose industrial hose. It is produced in carbon steel, bronze, stainless steel (types 304L, 316L and 321), monel, titanium and many others. The corrugated hose is manufactured from a cylindrical, thin walled tube formed from rolled strip and joined at the seam by butt welding. Impressed into this tube is a corrugated annular profile. Annular corrugated hose has several advantages over helical hose. It is not subject to damaging torsional stress due to longitudinal expansion resulting from pressure rises. When the corrugations are closely spaced, the hose is referred to as "standard pitch" hose. When the corrugations are more widely spaced, the hose is referred to as "open pitch" hose. All information in this section is relevant to standard pitch, annular corrugated hose. Data on open pitch hose is available upon request.

The thickness of the metal strip, the height of the corrugations and the number of corrugations per foot all affect the performance characteristics of metal hose. Flexibility in corrugated hose
is the result of the bending of the metal corrugations. Service life varies depending upon the severity of the flexing, the temperature, corrosive conditions, pressure and vibration to which the hose is subjected.

Unless restrained, corrugated hose will elongate when subjected to increasing internal pressure. This restraint is provided by a braided covering, consisting of a tubular sheath of woven metal wires fitted tightly over the corrugated hose and secured at each end. Flexibility of the corrugated hose is not appreciably affected by this wire braid covering. In addition, the braid provides squirm support and dampens vibration. In higher pressure applications, the use of additional braid covers will provide additional working pressure. Unbraided hose is satisfactory for vacuum and low pressure applications.

Corrugated hose is recommended for applications involving permanent bends, and in situations where flexing is predictable, that is, machine controlled. Also, whenever absolute leak prevention is essential, corrugated hose should be selected.

Guide to Specification Table Headings

The specification tables below tabulate the dimensions and properties of Penflex corrugated hose. The explanations on this page give complete descriptions for each of the column headings of those tables.

Properties

  • Hose Size- This column lists the nominal I.D. sizes of the corrugated hose manufactured by Penflex.
  • Braid- This column shows the number of wire braid covering(s) required for the indicated pressure rating.
  • Hose O.D.- This column indicates the nominal outside diameter of each size stated in inches.
  • Pressure Ratings- The maximum working, maximum test and nominal burst pressures for each hose size shown are based on assemblies with welded on fittings for stainless and steel hose, and brazed on fittings for bronze hose. These ratings are in PSIG at 70ºF.

The maximum working rating is the maximum operating pressure to which a hose assembly should be subjected. These ratings represent the application of a 4 to 1 safety factor against nominal burst pressure. For installations involving pulsating, the peak pressure should be limited to 50% of the maximum working pressure.
The maximum test rating is the maximum pressure to which a straight hose assembly may be subjected without causing permanent deformation of the hose.

The nominal burst rating is the pressure at which a hose assembly can be expected to rupture. This rating is predicated upon the hose being installed in a straight position and at normal room temperature.
  • Weight- This column shows the approximate weight per hundred feet of each size and is given in pounds per hundred feet.
  • Centerline radius for constant flexing- This column states, in inches the minimum bend radius to which a hose size may be bent when installed in conditions of motion that occur on a regular or intermittent basis.
  • Centerline radius for static bend- This column states, in inches, the minimum bend radius to which a hose size may be bent when installed in conditions of no movement other than infrequent vibrations.

Temperature Adjustment Factor Table

In general, the strength and therefore the pressure rating of metal hose decreases as the temperature increases. Thus, as the operating temperature of a metal hose assembly increases, the maximum allowable working pressure of the assembly decreases. The pressure ratings shown in the specifications charts for corrugated and interlocked hose are valid at 70ºF. Elevated service temperatures will decrease these pressure ratings by the factors shown in the following chart. What also must be considered is the maximum working temperature of the end fittings, of the hose and their method of attachment.

Example:

Calculate the maximum working pressure for ¾" ID single braided stainless steel corrugated hose at 800ºF.

From the corrugated metal hose specification table, the maximum working pressure at 70ºF is 775 PSIG.

Multiply 775 PSIG by 0.66. The maximum working pressure at 800ºF is 511 PSIG
