Introduction

   Santoprene® Rubber consists of thermoplastic elastomer vulcanized rubber particles dispersed throughout a heat-formable plastic base. This unique material combines the heat resistance and low-compression set of vulcanized rubber with the processing ease of thermoplastics. Tampa Rubber and Gasket is pleased to announce the immediate availability of Santoprene Rubber sheet to our industry.
   A revolutionary material, Santoprene Rubber combines increased manufacturing precision with unique qualities rarely found in thermoset rubber or other thermoplastic elastomers. Santoprene Rubber has excellent dynamic flex fatigue properties and very good resistance to tension set and compression set. These attributes allow consistent, proven performance far beyond that of any other thermoplastic material.
   Superior to rubber under many conditions, Santoprene Rubber is an effective general purpose material for a broad spectrum of uses, and possesses a wide combination of desirable properties in a single material. Santoprene Rubber has stable, mechanical properties over a useful operating temperature range, allowing improved performance and longer life for dynamic rubber parts.
   Designed for applications where performance is desirable over cost, Santoprene Rubber is still surprisingly affordable when total production costs are taken into account. Also, processing steps such as talc application and incoming quality control inspection can be eliminated completely.
   Santoprene Rubber can be modified to fit many specific design needs, such as flame and ultraviolet resistance and colorability and meets FDA and NSF regulations. Additionally, Santoprene Rubber easily meets other general purpose demands such as variable hardness grades and absence of taste and odor.



DURABLE

   Santoprene Rubber's low tension and compression set values represent a major breakthrough for thermoplastic materials. Its resistance to tension set after stretching is good across all hardness grades as well. Santoprene Rubber's resistance to compression set after repeated deflection is also excellent, particularly at high temperatures and for long periods of time. The low compression and tension set values of the softer grades of Santoprene Rubber make them well-suited for many applications requiring especially tight sealing.
   Flex fatigue resistance of Santoprene Rubber is extremely high compared to many thermoset rubbers. The softer grades of Santoprene Rubber are especially applicable in fatigue resistance situations normally met by specially compounded natural rubber.
   Santoprene Rubber's heat and cold resistance offers performance from -81°F to +275°F without cracking or tackiness. Though already possessing an overall low brittle point, softer grades of Santoprene Rubber have an even greater degree of low temperature flexibility.
   Santoprene Rubber offers fluid resistance equivalent to that of many thermoset rubbers, such as neoprene and EPDM compounds. Tests show excellent resistance to water-based fluids, including both acids and bases.
   The tear strength of Santoprene Rubber is comparable to many thermoset rubbers. This allows its use in a wide variety of applications now employing conventional vulcanized rubbers. This attribute is useful not only in processing, where greater demands may be placed on the material for faster throughput, but also in more durable product performance.
   The environmental stability of Santoprene Rubber is excellent, exceeding many thermoset rubbers. The retention of tensile strength and compression properties after 2000 hours in a xenon arc weatherometer exceeds 90% in most cases. Additionally, many vulcanized rubbers deteriorate during prolonged exposure to air, oxygen of ozone. Santoprene Rubber is designed to be resistant to these gases, with its ozone resistance rated as outstanding. Extensive heat aging of several vulcanized rubber materials frequently cause a severe change in their mechanical properties. Under similar conditions, Santoprene Rubber shows less than a 25% change in these mechanical properties after 1000 hours of hot-air testing, representing a significant performance advantage compared to many thermoset rubber compounds. Even more improved heat aging performance can be achieved when necessary through the addition of additives designed for this purpose.

ADAPTABLE

   Santoprene Rubber is available in a wide range of hardness grades, and can be used with standard color concentrates to produce a wide variety of colors
   Extremely accurate gauges of Santoprene Rubber are available, since it is quite stable and amenable to automatic processing equipment. Tolerances from ± .002" to ± .005" across an entire surface are the norm.
   Santoprene Rubber's physical properties enable thinner sealing for gaskets down to .010", making many gasket parts feasible where tolerances are too extreme for other materials.
   Santoprene Rubber's tensile properties can be varied to meet diverse design configurations without extra cost or processing complexity and with no loss of efficiency.

PRACTICAL

   Santoprene Rubber has no taste or odor and is non-toxic and sterilizable, making it an excellent candidate for many food service applications and other areas of design requiring close contact with human consumables, such as medicine.
   Santoprene Rubber has a low specific gravity, so shipping costs of 10 to 15% can be saved for the same amount of standard rubber parts.

   The following ratings are based on data contained in the Santoprene® Rubber Fluids Resistance bulletin, TPE-03-03, estimates of performance based on solubility parameters, and field experience, where testing has been conducted for one week at 73°F. Although the information contained in these tables is believed to be correct, Monsanto makes no warranty, express or implied, as to their accuracy or completeness. It is always advisable to test the materials thoroughly under actual use conditions.
